Orange Bomber

This is a steelhead fly that you should find quite useful. Many steelhead flies are wets, nymphs or streamers, but this is a floater, designed to be fished on the surface down and across and skated at the end of the drift. If you are weak of heart or tremble at the thought of a large fish chasing and smashing a surface fly then stop right here. For those of you who need this type of action to keep the heart racing then here goes.

Good Luck!

Pattern Recipe & Tying Instructions

Hook: dry, long shank 4-10
Thread: orange or red strong for spinning deer hair, 3/0 or Kevlar
Tail: white calf tail or similar
Rib: mono or fine wire
Body:  orange deer hair
Wing: white calf tail or similar
Hackle: Grizzly
Tying Notes:
Tie in the tail and wing first with the wing extending out over the eye of the hook at a 30 – 45 degree angle.

Next tie in the rib and then begin to spin the deer hair body. Once that is done carefully use a razor blade or scissors to clip the body tightly.

Tie in the hackle at the eye of the hook and palmer it towards the hook bend moving it back and forth to get the hackle down deep.

Rib forward and tie off. Best of luck and hang on!
