Jailbird

Looking for a small nymph that is easy to tie and does a nice job of imitating lots of small emerging insects that trout are eager to gobble up? This is the one for you. If your fly box is full of large nymphs then you’ll be pleasantly surprised as to the results possible with this fly. Fish it deep wherever small nymphs are prolific, especially spring creeks and tailwaters in the riffly water with enough split shot to get it down where the fish are vacuuming the drift for food.

.Good Luck!

Pattern Recipe & Tying Instructions

Hook: scud or curve shank hook size 14 – 20
Thread: red 6/0
Tail: none
Rib: Red 6/0 tying thread
Body:  blue winged olive poly
Wingcase: white foam
Hackle: none
Tying Notes:
To start mount the hook and tie in the thread about 1/3rd of the way back from the eye.

Next tie in a piece of foam and bind it down with the thread as you go towards the eye.

Keep tying the thread around the shank back towards the original tie in spot and then fold the foam back and tie down with the thread.

Tie off the thread and then tie it in again at the eye.

Dub a thin body and figure 8 around the wingcase and back to the curve of the hook stopping the dubbing at that point.

Use the thread as a rib and wind it back towards the eye where it is tied off for the last time.

Done – don't forget to release your catch
