Anglers & Readers Book Discussion

Guilderland Library

The water may be high, muddy or cold. Bass and trout seasons may not yet be open. However, until fishing conditions get better, you can join us on three Thursday evenings for the next best thing to actually fishing: reading excellent books about fishing. We will read Norman Maclean’s novella, A River Runs through It, John Gierach’s essay collection, Trout Bum, and The Armchair Angler, an anthology of authors, edited by Terry Brykczynski and David Reuther. From these books, we can discuss the writing, why we fish and the rewards it brings, the humor and the raw adventure – and even a few tips on catching fish. If the weather permits, we may have the last book discussion a-stream.

  • February 23: A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean

  • March 29: Trout Bum by John Gierach

  • April 26: The Armchair Angler, edited by Terry Brykczynski and David Reuther

Clearwater Chapter TU Annual Flea Market

Albany, NY

Save March 24th for our annual Flea Market. Buy a table for only $20 plus 10 percent of what you take in. Second table and if needed a 3rd table are only $15 each. There will be 3 Chapter tables where, if you only have a few things to sell, one to 10, not enough to warrant buying a table, we can sell for you. Your cost is only 10 percent of sales.

Doors will open at 8:30 am and we will stay open until 1 pm. There will be a $3 admission fee. Vendors can set up between 7 and 8:30 am. If you have anything you'd like to donate please call Bob Mead and give me a list of items and approximate value.  The chapter will greatly appreciate it. Donations are deductible to the full extent of the law.

I would appreciate receiving any donated items or chapter table items ahead of time so they can be tagged and arranged. We will also accept items that morning, but it is a pretty hectic time. If you have 15 or 20 items think of splitting a table with another member who also has a larger number of items than qualifies for the chapter table.

If you'd like a table or wish to donate items please call\email Bob Mead, at 518-399-9000.  The table and admission fees usually just about cover the cost of the room.  Our profit is, for the most part, derived from the 10 percent of the items sold.

A couple volunteers are needed to man the door and another 2 volunteers to man the chapter tables.  It is a great opportunity to stock up on needed items at great prices, or to sell or donate items you no longer need.

Mohawk Valley TU Chapter Trout & Salmon Expo

New Hartford, NY

10 AM - 4 PM

This year's EXPO is expected to draw even more visitors from all regions of upstate New York. The TU Trout and Salmon Fishing Expo will feature a diverse lineup of fishing tackle and equipment, and seminars designed to increase your knowledge of area streams. It will include fly and bait casting demonstrations, rod building, fly tying, as well as a trout in the classroom exhibit. The highlight of the program will be in depth discussions of “how to” fish our most popular fisheries; The West Canada, the Delaware, Fish Creek, Salmon River, the Oriskany, and Lake Ontario.
Seminars will include Dan Josephson, Cornell researcher, who will speak on Trout and his many years studying the Adirondack Brook Trout and Rick Pecci on how to fish Lake Ontario and more.

The goal of the event is to highlight the advantages of living in an area that has some of the finest fisheries in the country, to demonstrate the link between clean waters and the habitat of trout and salmon, and to show why more families are participating in the sport of fishing.

This is a fun event for all interested in the sport of fishing and the preservation of our cold water fisheries!  Location is the New Hartford Recreation Center on Mill St in New Hartford

Hungry Trout Resort

Wilmington, NY

The Annual Ausable Hungry Trout trip will be June 1,2, & 3, 2012. The price this year is $214 per person (a slight increase from the $209 it was for each of the last 3 years).

It is the same deal as always. Two nights stay, 2 breakfasts, and an order from the menu dinner. Booze is not included. Taxes and tips are included.

I do suggest a couple extra bucks tip for the girls if they give you outstanding service. Always a fun time. Sign up early.

He needs to know your room-mate preference, or if you usually share a room with another guy, your spouse, S\O, etc., please let him know that too.

Should you have to cancel, it is best to do so as early as possible, and then you must notify Bob Mead and also call the Hungry Trout so that someone else might be able to book a spot in your place and so that another person might not have an increase in their costs if a room is not filled.

Chapter General Meeting, Albany, NY

The September Meeting of Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited was held on September 19th with guest speaker, Joe Goodspeed, from the Cortland Line Company, who presented a talk on 'Tailwater Nymphing Tricks.'

"Tailwater Nymphing Tricks" was a conversation on fishing pressure and how it affects selectivity and
changes behavior of Wild Trout. Energy expenditure theory, stomach samples, pattern selection, rigging techniques for the entire water column and nymphing gear were addressed.

Joe Goodspeed is currently the fly line and product design coordinator for Cortland Line Co. He cut his teeth fly fishing on western tailwaters, spending more than 365 days on Rocky Mountain tailwaters by
age 21 thanks to his father's generous summer camping vacations.  Formerly a diehard dry fly angler, Joe now spends far more time nymphing - about 225 days or partial days on the water right at current count,
with the vast majority of that time spent chasing Trout, Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon.

Support Casting for Recovery's belief in "To Fish is to Hope"

Please donate or volunteer your time for this very important cause.

Casting for Recovery® (CFR), founded in 1996, is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. We enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors by offering no-cost retreats tailored to promote and support mental and physical healing through shared experiences and the learning of new skills. At the end of 2008 we have served 3,500 women through the delivery of 269 retreats, helped by over 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

Through 2½-day retreats, the sport of fly-fishing is used to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The effective balance between the physical benefits of the gentle exercise provided by fly-fishing and the counseling curriculum benefits women at any age and any stage of treatment or recovery. The program allows women to get away from their cancer, while providing support from the medical/psychosocial professionals present at every retreat.
