Batten Kill Cleanup Days 2010

Next day TBA

Rte 313 Rest area ~3 miles East of Cambridge, NY.

Clearwater Chapter adopted a ~3 mile stretch of Rte 313 next to it's home water, the Batten Kill, and 4 times per year we’ll spend an hour or so picking up roadside debris then enjoy a picnic afterwards with our friends from the Batten Kill Conservancy.  Please join us for some easy work, fresh air, time with old & new friends, and refreshments provided before and afterwards.

(Plus, maybe some members will be willing to share their ‘secret’ fishing spots on the Batten Kill to those who participate…).

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Public Meeting on Hydraulic Fracturing Research Study

Binghamton, N.Y.

Anderson Performing Arts Center at Binghamton University

Three sessions:

    8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

    1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    6 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT

Contact: Elias Rodriguez, (212) 637-3664,

(New York, N.Y. – June 18, 2010)  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting four public information meetings on the proposed study of the relationship between hydraulic fracturing and its potential impacts on drinking water. Hydraulic fracturing is a process that drills vertical and horizontal cracks underground that help withdraw gas or oil from coalbeds, shale and other geological formations. By pumping fracturing fluids (water and chemical additives) and sands into rock formations, fractures are created in the formation from which natural gas or oil can be more easily extracted. The meetings will provide public information about the proposed study scope and design. EPA will solicit public comments on the draft study plan.

There are several public meetings that will be held on the following dates nationwide:

  • July 8 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. CDT at the Hilton Fort Worth in Fort Worth, Texas

  • July 13 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. MDT at the Marriot Tech Center’s Rocky Mountain Events Center in Denver, Colo.

  • July 22 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT at the Hilton Garden Inn in Canonsburg, Pa.

  • August 12 at the Anderson Performing Arts Center at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. for 3 sessions - 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT

Natural gas plays a key role in our nation’s clean energy future and hydraulic fracturing is one way of accessing this vital resource. However, serious concerns have been raised about hydraulic fracturing’s potential impact on drinking water, human health and the environment. To address these concerns, EPA announced in March that it will study the potential adverse impact that hydraulic fracturing may have on drinking water.

To support the initial planning phase and guide the development of the study plan, the agency sought suggestions and comments from the EPA Science Advisory Board (SAB)—an independent, external federal advisory committee. The agency will use this advice and extensive stakeholder input to guide the design of the study.

Stakeholders are requested to pre-register for the meetings at least 72 hours before each meeting.

Casting for Recovery® (CFR), founded in 1996, is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. We enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors by offering no-cost retreats tailored to promote and support mental and physical healing through shared experiences and the learning of new skills. At the end of 2008 we have served 3,500 women through the delivery of 269 retreats, helped by over 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

Through 2½-day retreats, the sport of fly-fishing is used to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The effective balance between the physical benefits of the gentle exercise provided by fly-fishing and the counseling curriculum benefits women at any age and any stage of treatment or recovery. The program allows women to get away from their cancer, while providing support from the medical/psychosocial professionals present at every retreat.

Baxter House River Outfitters presented an excellent talk on 'Fishing the East Branch of the Delaware'

Ken Tutalo, the owner of the Baxter House River Outfitters, has been fishing the waters of the Upper Delaware for over 30 years. Over the last 10 years while operating the Baxter House, Ken has shared his knowledge and love of the local waters with hundreds of people.  When not guiding or helping customers in the Fly Shop, Ken can usually be found stalking the glass like pools of the East Branch for Wary Browns or wading the pockets of the Lower Beaverkill for Wild Rainbows.

During the winter months Ken is a regular at the Winter Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Shows where he demonstrates fly tying techniques and gives seminars on topics pertaining to the Upper Delaware River System and Fly Fishing for Trout.

Ken also publishes the daily fishing report on the Baxter House Website, which is read by thousands weekly from April through November. Ken has also appeared on Fly Fishing DVD’s and on television. His most recent project was the Discovery Channel Program “Fishing Road Trip USA” which appeared on Discovery Travel.
