2010 Mohawk Watershed Symposium

Olin Center, Union College, Schenectady, NY

The Mohawk Watershed Group at Union College is pleased to invite you to the 2010 Mohawk Watershed Symposium on March 19, 2010, Olin Center, Union College, the second annual symposium on the physical aspects of the Mohawk Watershed.  We are planning a program similar to last year’s and we will have our online registration and abstract submission running by mid January.  Similar to last year, the meeting will highlight recent and on-going work in the watershed during oral and poster presentations. Following the technical sessions will be a banquet with a keynote address in the evening.

Please visit the Symposium website for more details and links to the 2009 Program and Abstracts ().

While there are many scientific and engineering aspects of the Mohawk Watershed that are important, the following themes are central to the conference focus:

  • Water quality, including nutrient loading, the effects of agriculture and industry on water quality, and contaminant fluxes.

  • Floods, including flood frequency, causes of flooding, and flood mitigation strategies;
Habitats, including bio-complexity, invasive species, analysis of benthic communities, and the distribution of fish and other vertebrates.

  • Sediment yield, including transport and deposition through the watershed, bank erosion and potential hazards, slope processes, and sediment budget.
Impact of watershed processes on infrastructure, including bridges, dams, locks, canals and strategies for floodplain restoration.

  • Water rights, including issues that explore the balance between municipal water use and how this might conflict with demands by power generation, industry, drilling, ecosystem management and maintenance of sustainable ecosystems.

  • Synoptic evaluations of the watershed including basin-wide overviews and compilations using GIS, databases and other methods of integrating and analyzing regionally significant data.

  • Water budget, including aspects of climate change, precipitation patterns and weather-related phenomena.

NYS DEC Public Information Meeting for Management Plans for Shad and Herring

by Rob Streeter

Albany Times Union, March 4, 2010

If you are an ardent Hudson River angler, there are several things you need to be aware of that might affect your fishing, including an upcoming meeting on river herring.

On March 30, 2010, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will be holding public informational meetings on management plans for shad and herring. The closest meeting for Capital District anglers will be at the Town of Bethlehem Town Hall at 445 Delaware Ave., and will run from 7 to 10 p.m.

The topic for the meeting is centered on the amendment adopted by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission in May of 2009 from the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Shad and River Herring. New York is a member of ASMFC, and is legally required to follow the management plan.

Amendment 2 requires that participating states close fisheries for shad and river herring (both commercial and recreational) except for systems with a sustainable fishery. Thus for New York to allow recreational fishing for shad, alewives or bluebacked herring, the state would have to certify that these species offered a sustainable fishery under the definition established in the plan. Basically, states would have to document there is no decline in the population levels.

Amendment 2 can be viewed in its entirety at http://www.asmfc.org under "managed species," for shad and river herring.

At this point it is not known whether fishing for all river herring species would be closed this year. The goal for the meetings is to discuss the amendment and give a presentation on available data for these species in the Hudson, including the population estimates. The meetings will also open a discussion on how the fishery operates and the need for changes to meet the terms of the amendment.

Interested parties should attend the meeting, e-mail: r3hrf@gw.dec.state.ny.us or call Kathy Hattalia at (845) 256-3071 and voice their opinions.

DEC did announce in November that shad fishing will close on the Hudson due to declining numbers. Now with the new regulations the only place for shad fishing in the state would be on the Delaware. As someone who really enjoyed fly-fishing for shad at the Troy Dam, this is a sad development for the area. To date, there has been no announcement on herring, which could have a major impact on striped-bass anglers who prefer these species for bait.

Hudson River anglers should also be aware that they will need the new recreational marine fisheries license to fish the tidal waters of the river.

The fishery on the Hudson for stripers, shad, and herring is a rite of spring around here, enjoyed by many anglers. Hopefully we will continue to be able to enjoy this great area opportunity in the future.

"Come Hell or High Water"

First Annual Fly Fishing Festival & Tour

"Hell or High Water" is a two day annual fly fishing festival and film tour to be hosted at West Branch Angler. The idea is to celebrate the Catskills, beginning of Spring and a new fly fishing season. We have been working closely with the major fly fishing manufacturers and local business's to bring something for everyone. This will be an event to remember mark the dates in your calendar today.

Event Overview

The Fly Fishing Film Tour: In just it's fourth year, The Fly Fishing Film Tour has become the fishing entertainment event of the year. The Film Tour will be seen in well over 80 cities in 2010 and will showcase some of the best independent outdoor film makers. The goal of the Fly Fishing Film Tour is to energize the industry and inspire film makers to create new cutting edge films to both entertain and educate outdoor enthusiasts. Tickets go on sale 2/22.  Free Hardy Reel Maintenance: John Shaner of Hardy USA and resident Hardy expert will be set up at the fly shop with a work-bench where he can clean and lubricate any Hardy reel brought to him. He will also give out a free bottle of Hardy lubricant to each angler who brings in a Hardy reel. John will also be able to describe the history of each reel and answer any questions regarding the history of Hardy rods and reels.

Spey Casting Clinic With Scott Fly Rod Pro Staff Rick Kustich: Rick Kustich is co-author of the acclaimed book Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead and has fly fished for steelhead in the Great Lakes region for almost thirty years. He is a writer, photographer, and fly tyer. He has written three other fly fishing books, is a regular contributor to both national and regional publications, and recently introduced his first DVD.

"The Beauty of Fly Fishing": Austin "Mac" Francis, fly-fishing historian and avid angler, will demonstrate fly casting, show examples of the delicate feather-and-steel confections fly fishers use to fool their prey, and take you on a photo journey to some of the world's beautiful rivers where the sport is pursued - Montana, England, New Zealand, and in our own backyard, the Catskill rivers where American fly fishing came of age. Signed copies of Francis's acclaimed book Land of Little Rivers will be available after his talk.

Sage Casting Analyzer: You're waist-deep and struggling upstream when you see the rise in a foam line, 30 feet into the wind. The perfect cast would come in handy about now... The Sage Casting Analyzer records the essential components of your fly cast-such as symmetry, arc, smoothness, and speed- and then compares that data to the cast of a Sage Expert. The result? You get hard stats on how you can perfect the art of fly casting.

"Fly Fishing England": John Shaner of Hardy USA will be putting on a beautiful slide show presentation followed by Q & A about fly fishing techniques and destinations in England.

9 Hole Men's & Women's Fly Casting Contest: John Stacey of Cortland Lines will be setting up a 9 hole problem area casting course. The course's nine holes will each highlight different problems that anglers face on the river. A prize will be awarded to each division, this is a lot of fun and a good way to work off the rust on your cast from winter.

Orvis Hydros Test Cast: Tom Zemianek of The Orvis Company will have the full line of the new Hydros fly rods available for casting. Winner of the Midcurrent.com 2009 Best of Show award, our new Hydros rods use the same graphite and scrim technologies as the award winning Helios rods, and at a lower pricepoint than the premier competitive rods. Sign up for the test cast and get get a free Orvis Hydros hat.  Test Float Outcast PontOon Boats: At Outcast, they believe access is everything. Any angler can choose to fish from the bank, but wouldn't you rather be in the game than on the sidelines? When you purchase one of thier float tubes or boats, you get worry-free access so you can concentrate on fishing. We will have a short 1 mile track where you can test out a new boats how they were meant to be.... on the river.

At the end of 2008 we have served 3,500 women through the delivery of 269 retreats, helped by over 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

Through 2½-day retreats, the sport of fly-fishing is used to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The effective balance between the physical benefits of the gentle exercise provided by fly-fishing and the counseling curriculum benefits women at any age and any stage of treatment or recovery. Chapter General Meeting for February

Lots of great information on the American Shad and Striped Bass fishery in the Hudson and regional estuaries was presented.  We need to protect these fish stocks as they are seriously depleted from overfishing and\or taking of mature spawning fish,

    February's speaker was: Andrew Kahnle

Guest Fly Tier was: Heath Clayson

Andy is a Senior DEC Biologist with his office in New Paltz. He will speak and give a power point presentation on the anadromous fish of the Hudson River.  Andy did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and received an MS from Utah State University. He then worked for a year for the state of Utah on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir and then for seven years as a private consultant in south east Pennsylvania. Since 1980 he has worked for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and as leader of the Hudson River Fisheries Unit since 1985. For the past thirty years his focus has been biology and management of anadromous fish of the US Atlantic coast. He has served on or chaired many interstate and international committees that managed US and Canadian anadromous fish and has authored many reports and scientific papers.

All are welcome. Meetings are held at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel about a mile east of the end of the Northway (I-87).  We start with a guest fly tier at 6:30pm and our presentation begins about an hour later. Admission to our meetings is free and public is always invited, so please bring a friend(s) and meet with many of the local 'expert' Fly Fishers, Fly Tiers, and Conservationists.
